DeKalb, IL- The DeKalb Kite Fest has long been a fall tradition in our community and the DeKalb Park District is excited to now be hosting the event in its 15th year on Sunday, September 13, from 11 am – 4 pm. Formerly hosted by the DeKalb County Convention & Visitor’s Bureau on NIU campus grounds, Kite Fest will now take place at a new location, DeKalb Kiwanis Park, located at Fairview Drive and South 4th Street.
“The DCCVB did an excellent job putting on Kite Fest these past fourteen years, however, the baton has officially been passed to the Park District. We are thrilled to present this outdoor, recreational event that so many residents have enjoyed over the years,” stated Superintendent of Recreation, Greg Bruggeman. “We’re not going to let COVID-19 put a damper on things and we have a safe plan for the 2020 version of this festival that stays true to the spirit of the event.”
While Kite Fest normally draws thousands of visitors, due to COVID-19 safety guidelines, things will certainly look different this year to keep the crowds under control. Although this is a free event, participants must pre-register at dekalbparkdistrict.com for two separate group area options and four activity ‘wave’ sections. Each of these waves will be split up into A and B groups, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm or 1:30 - 3:30 pm. Group A will enjoy kite flying the first hour and activities the second hour, while Group B will enjoy activities for the first hour and kite flying for the second hour. Face coverings will be required on-site when 6 feet or less of social distancing cannot be maintained.
Everyone will delight in Kite Fest traditions such as giant inflatable kites and dancing kites high up in the sky, plus some fun, seasonal on-site activities. There will not be a candy-drop this year, however, the Cream King ice cream truck will be a part of the event once again, selling their frozen treats. Big D’s Hotdogs will also be on-site providing concessions for a small fee. Seasonal activities will take place in the main Kiwanis parking lot and park shelter, with free Kite Fest parking at the Sports and Recreation Center, located South 1765 4th Street.
Featured kite flyers will include Al Sparling, Darryl Waters, Anthony Catalano, Team Sky FX, and Team Chicago Kite. Participants can either bring their own kite or buy one at the event! Manja string or any other type of glass covered string is prohibited.
And thank you to our event sponsor for their support, Red Roof Inn, Larson & Darby, and Heartland Bank.
