DeKalb, IL- 2020 has been a challenging year in countless ways for families on a local, national, and global level. The pandemic has placed financial strain on people unlike any other time in our modern history, and has caused an even greater need for the physical and mental health benefits that recreation provides.
The DeKalb Park District is calling upon the community to be a part of the annual fundraising event, Golf Fore the Kids Scholarship Golf Outing, taking place on Monday, August 3rd at River Heights Golf Course, located at 1020 Sharon Drive. Participants may sign up to play in the outing as an individual ($60), foursome ($200), or they may make a charitable contribution in any amount.
Typically held in June each year, the event raised $6,500 in 2019. Staff would love to surpass those numbers and provide more support to DeKalb residents through the District Scholarship Program this year. Businesses are also invited to show the community support and take part in the event by either becoming a sponsor or signing up a team.
The funds go towards both park district programs and access to facilities. Each year the District provides thousands of dollars for youth in DeKalb to participate in recreation programs like swimming, day camps, and athletics. This would not be possible without the generous support of the DeKalb community members and businesses.
“Throughout the summer, we’ve seen the need for financial support increase for DeKalb families. Many people have experienced layoffs or a sudden reduction of income,” stated Superintendent of Recreation, Greg Bruggeman. “With the addition of unexpected childcare costs coming up this fall for families, we anticipate the need for assistance from our Scholoarship Program will grow over the next year. We want to help community members have access to programs as much as we can.”
The event is being hosted with Phase 4 safety guidelines, so things will look a little different this year. Lunch will be served at 11:00 am with a ‘shotgun start’ at noon. Players from different households must wear face coverings when using golf carts and when social distancing cannot be maintained. Club rentals are also unavailable at this time, so you must bring your own set of clubs. A full list of the Phase 4 golf guidelines can be found on the golfdekalb.com website.
Although Phase 4 is the closest to “normal” that our community has seen in months, in order to continue hosting events and programs, we must play it safe. It is essential that golfers follow the safety guidelines, continue to practice physical distancing, and wear a face-covering where applicable.
