Holiday Happiness Guaranteed

Tue November 24, 2020

DeKalb, IL- Each new season has brought on new challenges in determining how to safely celebrate our holidays and enjoy family traditions. While these special dates are often central to the idea of physically gathering friends and family together, we have all had to get creative in how we connect when COVID-19 restrictions require us to be distant from one another. Despite cases on the rise and seeing state-wide restrictions increase as we near the winter season, we all must think outside the box on how we can safely celebrate this season. The DeKalb Park District is excited to bring some safe, family-friendly, holiday cheer to the community this December with two, brand new events.

On Saturday, December 5, the public is invited to meet up with the Big Guy himself at Hopkins Park, located at 1403 Sycamore Road, from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Drive-Thru Santa Express event. Seasonal lights at the Hopkins Park Shelter will sparkle your holiday spirit as you drive up to meet with Santa, who will be social distancing inside a life-size snow globe! For a $25 fee, each vehicle will get a photo opportunity, holiday take-home activity, and a special gift from Santa. Pre-registration is required and a special thank you to our sponsors Metro by T-Mobile, Mortenson, and Homelight Realty.

With the popularity of the Halloween October contest, staff is introducing the first annual DeKalb Holiday House Decorating Contest! Residents are invited to channel their inner Clark Griswold and enter their house into the contest for a chance to win in two categories: Best Overall Theme (staff pick) or People’s Choice. The deadline to register is Tuesday, December 8 and the fee to participate per household is $5.

All displays will be judged by Park District staff on Wednesday, December 9, between 4:00 - 9:00 pm. This contest is for DeKalb residents only. Addresses of all entries will be published in local media unless specified otherwise at the time of registration. The winner for Best Overall Theme (staff pick) and participating addresses will be published on December 10. All displays will also be judged online through the District Facebook page for a People's Choice Award, December 10 - 20. The image with the most “likes” by 9:00 pm on December 20 wins! The People’s Choice winner will be officially announced on December 21. The winners will receive a prize package in partnership with Whiskey Acres.

Both events can be safely offered while our region is in Tier 3 mitigations. Park District staff wants to remind the public to stay safe this holiday season, so please wear a face-covering at all outdoor recreational activities when 6 feet or less of social distancing cannot be maintained, and that only 10 people may gather in one area while utilizing our parks at this time.
